Since its founding in 1953, Allens Lane Art Center has been a cornerstone of the Mt. Airy community by bringing the residents together to participate in and enjoy the arts.  Whether its art classes for children or adults, amazing art exhibitions or cutting edge plays on the mainstage, there is something for everyone at Allens Lane.

THEATER CLASSES - Children/Teens/Adults

Pre-registration is REQUIRED for all classes.

To register for classes, please use our Online Registration Form or you can print out our form (.pdf) and mail with check, money order or Mastercard/Visa number to the address on the form. If you have questions, call 215-248-0546. Classes will run only if enough students register. If you are registered for a class and it does not run, you will be notified of the cancellation and your class fee will be refunded. Otherwise, assume the class is running.

Please pre-register! Registration deadline for all classes is 3 business days prior to the first class. After that, there will be a $20 late administration fee added to the cost of the class. Please note that some classes are run by third party vendors who do their own registration. Details are provided next to the class information. Any material fees are to be paid to the teacher on the first day of class.

Theater Class kStudentsStaging Silverstein (ages 6 - 11)
Instructor: Mariangela Saavedra
This class is about working with alternative texts, like poems, songs and popular stories to present them in a theatrical way while still conveying the prime message or intent of the original text. We will start by working with readings, using different voices and characterizations. We will use several  poems by Shel Silverstein and some popular song lyrics as our scripts. Then Students will work on blocking, division of text and characterizations for presentation in a showcase at the end of the 8 week class session. This class will exercise staging skills, acting skills, script interpretation skills and overall performance skills, while being fun and challenging for young performers.

Theater Class kStudentsImprov and Scene Study (ages 10 - 17)
Instructor: Mariangela Saavedra
Learn the basic structure and “rules” of Improv and Scene Study. Games like "What are you doing?", "Three Entrances" and "Party Quirks" are just a few of the Games we will explore and play.  Then we will move onto more difficult Improv scenes, and complex Improv Games. Fun and engaging, these improv exercises will encourage creativity, as we use the skills developed through these games to work on scenes with scripted text for performance at the end of the session. Students will develop strong acting and stage presence skills, playing to the strengths of each individual participant. The session will end with a showcase for families and friends, that will include demonstrations of our favorite games, and performances of our best scenes worked on during the session.

Special Theater Makeup Workshops- October 2018 (10yrs old and up)

Saturdays 3:30pm-5:30pm
$40 for a single workshop or $90 for all three (you save $30!)
There is also a $25 materials fee (special stage make-up kit)
- kids who register for all three classes only need to purchase one make-up kit - just make sure to bring it for each workshop.

Theater Class kStudentsIntro to Special Effects and Stage Makeup - 10/13/18
Deadline to Register: Monday October 8th, 2018
Student make up artists  will learn all the beginning basic techniques for stage and special effects make-up in a fun an interactive workshop , that will culminate with the students being able to successfully execute a make up design of their very own on themselves by the end of the workshop. The class will end with us taking pictures in a Photo Booth that will be emailed to the participants . Just in time for Halloween fun, participants get to keep their “starter kit” of makeup that includes items used in class along with supplies they can use to practice other techniques they learned during the session. Materials Fee includes the starter kit of stage make-up, and the case to keep it all in!

Wizards, Witches and Magical Creatures - 10/20/18
Deadline to Register: Monday October 15th, 2018
Student make up artists will learn techniques for doing stage makeup with a focus on executing designs for Wizards, Witches and Magical Creatures, in this interactive workshop.  Students will be given additional items to use with their starter kit of make-up, to successfully create and execute a make up design of their own based on the theme, by the end of the workshop. The class will end with us taking pictures of our Wizards, Fairies, Gnomes, and more in a Photo Booth that will be emailed to the participants and their families. Just in time for Halloween fun, participants get to keep their “starter kit” of makeup that includes items used in class along with supplies they can use to practice other design techniques they learned during the session. Materials Fee includes the starter kit of stage make-up, and the case to keep it all in!

Zombies, Ghosts and Ghouls - 10/27/18

Create a new show all in One Day

Saturday March 9, 2019
11:00am- 4:00pm
Performance at 4:00pm

Everyone is the star when they write and create their own show from scratch! Using improv games and story boards students will write, create, stage and perform their very own one of a kind show all in one day! The may include music elements, dance elements, audience participation, drama, comedy, costumes, props and anything else their imaginations can come up with that we can procure rehearse in 5 hours! A light snack will be provided in the afternoon, but students are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch to eat during the day.
Performance for family and friends will be at 4:00pm in the Allens Lane Theater!
