Living together in the community through the arts

Since its founding in 1953, Allens Lane Art Center has been a cornerstone of the Mt. Airy community by bringing the residents together to participate in and enjoy the arts.  Whether its art classes for children or adults, amazing art exhibitions or cutting edge plays on the mainstage, there is something for everyone at Allens Lane.

Get Involved

Allens Lane Art Center loves our volunteers. Whether you have skills in office administration, or just interested in helping us with our gallery, theater or building, we are interested in having you donate some of your valuable time and would like to hear from you. When you volunteer, we provide training so that you understand your position, general information about the center, and relevant artist/performance information. We understand that your time is valuable so we have made some positions very time specific while other jobs are much more open ended depending on your schedule. If you have a skill that you would like to bring to Allens Lane Art Center but don't see anything listed? Please contact us and let us know! We are happy to have our community arts center as a focal point of your community! To ensure that your time, energy and skills are put to good use, please take a moment to look over the list of available volunteer positions below and then fill out the form at the bottom of this page and let us know which position interests you. We will add your name to our volunteer email list and you will receive various notices for project assistants that you can respond to. Thank you.

Available Volunteer Positions

Allens Lane Theater

The Theater Committee is looking for individuals who can volunteer as ushers for our theater performances. Ushers are asked to arrive one hour prior to the start of the performance and stay until the show closes. Ushers get to see the plays for free (unless the show is sold out). Ushers are also invited to attend the opening night receptions for the cast/crew following the first performance.

Facility - Maintenance

General Help
We love our newly refurbished building and so do many of you. We want it looking it's best for a long time to come. We need your help with everything from painting to cleaning. Many, many, many people use our facility so we need to keep on top of it. General carpentry skills and having your own tools are a plus but not necessary.

Volunteer Coordinator

We are looking to strengthen and grow our volunteer program and we're looking for someone with administrative experience who would be willing to become our Volunteer Coordinator. This job could be done either on site or at home. The position would need someone who would be able to help with recruitment, volunteer interviews and matching up volunteers with jobs based on their skills and experiences. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who would like to get involved, have a huge impact, and would be able to work on their own schedule.

Special Events

This is the perfect job for anyone who would be available for the occasional special event at Allens Lane. We are looking for people who would be able to help us with registration, greeters, bar tending, and pitching in to help set up and break down our facility for special events.

Volunteer Application

Please fill out the application and submit. Once you submit, someone from Allens Lane Art Center will contact you to arrange for an interview.
