Porcelain Workshop: Try It! You Might Like It!

Workshop Description: Gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics and challenges of this unique clay: It’s beauty, it’s fussiness, and it’s affinity for luscious glaze results! In this hands-on throwing workshop Natalie will demonstrate, then assist participants in techniques to successfully throw porcelain on the potter’s wheel. She will share with you tips, as well as possible foibles, to better help you navigate your way with this beautiful clay.
The workshop will conclude with a demo of some basic glazing techniques, and with examples of finished glaze pieces for discussion. Participants may bring 2-3 small pieces of their own bisqued, cone 6 porcelain to try out various glaze applications. (Make sure to bring clay brand and temp rating.) We will fire in a cone 6 electric glaze kiln for you to pick up at a later date, or, you can choose to take your raw glazed pieces with you. A tools list will be sent to you in advance of the workshop.

Bring a friend, a date, or come to make new connections while discovering a hidden talent or renewing your creative flair. Your instructor will present a short introductory lesson in the wonderful medium of clay, followed by active creating by you!
~January 14 | The Potters Wheel: Put yourself in the drivers seat and take a spin on the potters wheel. Learn basic techniques of pottery making on the wheel including centering, pulling, and soft alterations of the clay. Enjoy a demonstration on trimming and glazing and play a round of pottery trivia! Projects will be kils fired and available for pick up within two weeks of the workshop date.
~February 11 | Love Handle Mugs: Sink your fingers into a lump of clay and let the magic begin! Create a perswonalized mug, tumbler, or tea bowl using slabs of clay and texture toold. Your creations will be kiln fired and finished with a glaze of your choice. Projects will be kils fired and available for pick up within two weeks of the workshop date.
~March 11 | Show Off Vases: Just in time for spring! Participants will roll, impress, stretch and shape clay into their very own creation. Your creations will be kiln fired and finished with a glaze of your choice. Projects will be kils fired and available for pick up within two weeks of the workshop date.
~April 18 | Creative Garden Pots: Roll up your sleeves and dig into a clay creation for your garden! Fun, fancy, funky... celebrate your spring plantings!
~May 13 | Garden Wall Pockets: Create a unique wall pocket to hang in your garden, to hold mail, or just for fun!
Glorious Bead Making
Instructor: Barbara Hanselman
Day/Time: Sunday, February 20, 10:00am -3:00pm (Snow Date Sunday, February 27)
Cost: $100 (materials included)
Workshop Description: Join us as we explore the fascinating history and creation of ceramic clay beads. Our time together will be spent making various shapes and styles of beads from both the past and present using scroddled, tan, red, and chocolate stoneware clay. Your earthy creations will be left raw or finished with terra sigillata prior to firing. Once dry, the beads and components are cleaned up using extra fine steel wool before enhancing them with terra sigillata, underglazes and/or stains.
Seder Plate Workshop
Instructor: Jennifer Wankoff
Day/Time: Sunday, March 20, 10:00am -3:00pm
Cost: $100 (materials and firing fee included)
Workshop Description: Spend a day with local ceramic artist Jen Wankoff creating a Seder plate! Jen will share her expertise in the art of Seder and the accoutrements that make the observance even more special. In addition, Jen will demonstrate two methods od throwing Kiddush cups on the wheel. Finishing techniwues will be demonstrated with options for slip trailing and resist methods using wax and tape. Jen will also provide handmade word stamps for your use.
