VIRTUAL ONE-DAY JOOMCHI WORKSHOP

One-Day Workshop: Abstract Painting and the Paper Art of Joomchi with Barbara Straussberg

Saturday, January 30, 2021, 1:00 -2:00 PM
Workshop Fee: $15

What is the ancient Korean paper technique called Joomchi? Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-manipulating technique where the artist works layers of Hanji paper together while wet to form one sheet of paper. Learn how Barbara Straussberg, abstract painter and paper artist, brings her abstract painting and printmaking sensibility to this traditional craft once used to make clothing and functional objects.

Straussberg will demonstrate the various stages of layering the handmade papers together, rolling them with her hands to bind the fibers together and opening up the fibers to create transparency and lace-like structures while lending insight into how an abstract painter can reinterpret a traditional craft into a contemporary art form.
