Visual Art Classes

Intro to Intuitive Color

Learn the power that color has in making art! This class will explore using color combinations to create mood and space in a painting. Students will learn color theory techniques as well as techniques for using transparent and opaque colors. We will look at other artists work to draw inspiration. Students may work abstractly, or from life. This class allows for experimentation, giving the student freedom to try new color combinations and paint applications. A great class for beginners and intermediate artists wishing to explore and expand their understanding of what color can do.

Abstracting the Figure

In this class students will work from the model. We will look at artist who explore abstraction in their own work to draw inspiration. Students will learn techniques of handling paint and mediums, be encouraged to use experimental color, be encouraged to use experimental texture, learn how to see shape and line in the figure, learn to make dynamic compositions. This class will use a live model during the class sessions (nude) for the students to draw from.

Figure Model Drawing - Open Studio

Allens Lane Art Center hosts a weekly Figure Drawing session on Monday evenings from 7:15p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The cost is $13.00 per person for each session. The sessions use professional nude models in a variety of short poses generally ranging from 1 to 10 minutes. Artists of all levels are welcome to join. For those folks who want to try it all! Try your hand at the potter’s wheel and also learn techniques for handbuilding on the table. Create wonderful works with either approach, or combine the two and create unique works in clay. Students will be introduced to a variety of surface treatments including texture, colored slips, and glaze decorating. Demonstrations and visual inspiration will be presented weekly. Group discussion, as well as individual feedback, will be provided. Bring your own ideas, or work along with the class with weekly projects.

These one-day projects will be kiln-fired to be picked up at a later date.

Teen & Adult Introduction to Pottery

Enjoy a creative start to you weekend!   This project based class is designed to introduce students to a variety of techniques in clay,   Projects will include functional pottery, garden art, and decorative tile.  We will use the potter’s wheel as well as hand forming techniques in our investigations of clay forms and surface decorations.  A materials list will be provided at time of registration.

Basic tools are provided but the center sells complete tool kits and clay ($25 per bag).  As this is an intro class, this class does not come with open studio access.

Ceramics for Seniors

Learn techniques for hand built functional pottery and sculpture, as well as low fire decoration and glazing. Beginners and experienced students are welcome to join our small group with plenty of individual instruction. All tools, glaze materials and firing are included in the class fee. Clay can be purchased on site for $25 for a 25 pound bag, and sharing a bag is acceptable. This class is handicapped accessible.

Your child will have fun while learning the basics of working with clay. Each child will create both functional and sculptural objects as they learn a variety of techniques. Students will learn to coil, slab and pinch while letting their imaginations go wild creating a variety of animals, monsters, fairies and pots . Raku Workshop
