Hand & Wheel

For those folks who want to try it all! Try your hand at the potter’s wheel and also learn techniques for handbuilding on the table. Create wonderful works with either approach, or combine the two and create unique works in clay. Students will be introduced to a variety of surface treatments including texture, colored slips, and glaze decorating. Demonstrations and visual inspiration will be presented weekly. Group discussion, as well as individual feedback, will be provided. Bring your own ideas, or work along with the class with weekly projects.

Includes access to all Open Studio sessions. All levels welcome.

Kidz-Clay Saturdays

Your child will have fun while learning the basics of working with clay. Each child will create both functional and sculptural objects as they learn a variety of techniques. Students will learn to coil, slab and pinch while letting their imaginations go wild creating a variety of animals, monsters, fairies and pots . The instructor, Joanne Bryant, also serves as the Ceramics instructor for our Summer Art Camp.

Fun with Clay II

This class will introduce the child to the potters wheel as well as the basics of hand building. Each child will have the chance to use the wheel as well as create whimsical sculptures. This class gets a bit messy so bring your play clothes and come have fun with us. The instructor, Joanne Bryant, also serves as the Ceramics instructor for our Summer Art Camp.

Ceramics Techniques for Artists with Visual Impairments

6 Week session

January 23-February 27 (6 week session)

The class: Learn basic ceramic hand-building techniques in sessions specifically geared toward individuals with visual impairments. Projects will cover functional pottery and sculpture. Coil, slab, solid, press mold, and pinch construction is covered along surface decoration techniques. Tactile demonstrations from the instructor introduce new techniques every week.  One on one feedback and hands on guidance is provided throughout the class time. All skill levels welcome.

This class (on Wednesday afternoons) is similar to our Vision Thru Art Program but is being offered as a fee based class.  Although our current Vision Thru Art program is free for all students, that program is currently at capacity and we are unable to accept new students into the program.  We do welcome students who want to be part of the free Vision Thru Art program to be placed on our waiting list (email us to be put on the waiting list).  Students currently enrolled in the Vision Thru Art program may enroll in this class as a supplement to the program but will be charged the class fee.

Our welcoming group meets in an air conditioned, handicapped accessible studio, with easy parking and public transportation within walking distance.

Figure Model Drawing - Open Studio

Allens Lane Art Center hosts a weekly Figure Drawing session on Monday evenings from 7:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The cost is $12.00 per person for each session. The sessions use professional nude models in a variety of short poses generally ranging from 1 to 10 minutes. Artists of all levels are welcome to join. There is no instructor, but we request that you RSVP prior to each session by contacting the monitor, Julie Zahn at juliezahn703@msn.com or 267-243-7065.
