OUR MISSION: For nearly 70 years since its establishment in 1953, Allens Lane Art Center has been a vital cornerstone in the Mount Airy, Germantown, and Greater Philadelphia communities with the mission of Growing Together Through the Arts. Allens Lane Theater typically presents four mainstage plays each season, continuing a long-standing community theater program that has seen thousands of artists and audience members pass through its doors. We are committed to producing the best of contemporary theater, exciting new plays, and boldly reimagined classics - especially plays that tell the stories of people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community to reflect the rich diversity of the neighborhoods surrounding Allens Lane Art Center. In addition to our Mainstage season, we offer theater classes for youth and adults, Children's Theater productions, a Reader's Theater to workshop new plays, and Community Voices events that highlight local artists of many different backgrounds. Allens Lane Theater aims to bring people of all ages together through the communal power of the arts and is committed to diverse representation in our productions both with the actors onstage and the artists working behind the scenes.
Allens Lane Theater invites directors to submit play proposals for consideration for our 2022-2023 season. We are especially interested in and are committed to producing plays that tell the stories of people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community – exciting contemporary plays that speak to our time now as well as boldly reimagined classical works that are in the public domain. Directors are encouraged to propose plays that have a maximum of eight actors in the cast. Potential Directors must submit a detailed proposal containing: A plot synopsis of the play, all cast and technical requirements, your reasons for choosing the play and your vision for it, along with a personal resume and a digital copy of the script, either in PDF or Word format. Paper copies of the script or your proposal will not be accepted. For our Mainstage Theater Season, directors will receive a stipend of $200, which is separate from the production budget. Directors from all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Whether you are a young professional or someone who has been directing for many years, Allens Lane Theater is committed to providing a space for directors to showcase their most exciting theatrical visions with the full support of Allens Lane Art Center.
For Playwrights: Reader’s Theater at Allens Lane provides an opportunity for playwrights to workshop your new play and see it rehearsed and performed as a reading, staged or otherwise, in front of an enthusiastic audience with a talkback following the performance. This is an incubator or new works, and all Reader’s Theater plays will be considered for subsequent Mainstage productions at Allens Lane. Please note that currently participation in Reader’s Theater for playwrights, directors, and actors is on a volunteer basis without a stipend. Interested playwrights should email a synopsis of your play, a digital copy of the script, along with a personal resume.
Please email all proposals to Theater Program Manager Josh Hitchens: email@example.com
The deadline for all submissions is December 31, 2021.
