In 1953, Allens Lane Art Center (ALAC) was founded to bring together a diverse community of Mount Airy residents through engagement in the arts. The center has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood for nearly 70 years and continues to thrive today with a rich variety of programs. The four core programs at ALAC are Theater, Art Education, Summer Art Camp, and Exhibitions. The Art Education program serves both young and adult artists and includes visual arts, ceramics, and theater classes.

Description of the Residency: The Curator of Music Residency at Allens Lane Art Center is created to fill the need for a community-oriented and community-led home for the musical arts in Northwest Philadelphia. Through this Residency, Allens Lane Art Center lives our commitment to both artistic and administrative diversity. Each Resident is encouraged to locate artists that reflect their own specialty or musical interest. Approved artists are included in the Live @ the Lane! performing arts season, leading to five to eight performances of specialized music on the theater stage. This Residency benefits our community through exposure to a broader range of musical talents, inspiring new talent to build their own path in the arts.
Job purpose and who it reports to: This role will be an integral part of the Live @ the Lane! program at Allens Lane Art Center. The primary purpose of this role is to seek out and connect local, professional, and/or high-quality music talent to the Performing Arts Manager in order to create and promote diverse and community-oriented music events in the Live @ the Lane season. The Resident Curator of Music will work in close collaboration with the Performing Arts Manager and will report to the Executive Director.
Job Length: This residency lasts for sixteen months (Feb of year one to Jun of year 2) at Allens Lane Art Center, estimated to begin in February and last through January of the following year. The exact start and end date will be determined with the Executive Director.
Job duties: The tasks of the role are estimated as follows:
- Select their own musical specialty or focus to be shared as a part of the season;
- Coordinate talent to fill 5-8 music slots in the Live @ the Lane season. “Talent” refers to musicians, vocalists, or other music artists as the term is understood in artistic settings;
- Provide technical assistance at music events if necessary
- Assist the Performing Arts Manager and Communications Manager with the promotion of music-related events.
Qualifications: Resident Curator of Music should have 5 or more years working in the music industry and a connection to Northwest Philadelphia.
Working conditions: The work for this role is hybrid; at least one day a month should be spent in person with the Performing Arts Manager at the beginning of the Residency while the season is being planned. Remaining work can occur virtually, with in-person meetings as necessary for tours or speaking to artists.
Compensation: This role receives an agreed-upon percentage of the event revenue.
