Summer Camp 2023
Allens Lane Art Center Summer Art Camp is a fun, creative, and enriching experience for campers ages 5-15.

About Summer Camp
June 20th – August 11th
There is no camp on July 4th
Following our mission of making the arts accessible to our entire community, campers experience a variety of creative outlets. This year, each week will bring a new art workshop, medium, and theme to discover. Campers will participate in half-day visual arts and half-day performing arts ranging in painting, drawing, mixed media, ceramics, improv, character creation, script writing, dance, and more! Each day will also include fun outdoor activities in the surrounding Allens Lane Park. During Summer Art Camp, young artists will discover and hone their creativity and share it through weekly Friday afternoon showcases!

Staffing
Sherry Ashton, the Director of Summer Camp for the last 14 years, has retired and passed on the baton to our new Director of Educational Programs, Mechele Abraham. Mechele will be directing all of Allens Lane’s educational programs and will be at ALAC year-round – managing our Young Artists Program, Summer Camp, and Adult Education programs. We are welcoming back many of the teaching artists and assistants this coming summer. We are also looking for new teaching artists to expand the artistic media that we are offering in 2023!
Camp Productions
The format of the camp productions will change this summer. There will not be an encompassing end-of-camp production. Instead, each Friday afternoon, your child will have a chance to showcase what they learned that week and show off their artwork in our studios and gallery.
Daily Camp Schedule
The daily schedule of activities will start with a drop-off period between 8:30 am and 9:30 am. Campers will be dropped off in our lobby and will be escorted to our spacious Theater, where they will be supervised by teaching assistants and counselors while drawing and coloring, perusing our children’s book collection, doing puzzles, or playing fun board games.
Parents must sign their child in every morning during drop off and sign them out during pick up to ensure safety.
First Half of the Day: 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
The first class of the day will begin at 9:30 am. Teaching artists and assistants will help each age group (bunk) transition from the Theater space to their classroom. Each workshop will take place from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm with a 30-minute outdoor activity break between 10:30 and 11 am. During inclement weather, the breaks will take place in our Dance Studio and Theater and include structured games and playtime.
Lunch: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Campers must bring their own lunch and water bottle each day. Lunch will take place between 12 and 1 pm. Lunch will take place outdoors when weather permitting, or in our Theater space. Campers will have an opportunity to play in the Allens Lane Park playground, basketball courts, and the park’s open spaces during lunchtime. The second class of the day will begin at 1:00 pm. Campers will transition to their classrooms with the help of Teaching Artists and Assistants.
Second Half of the Day: 1:00 – 3:30 pm
Classes will take place from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm with a 30 min break for outdoor activities between 2:00 and 2:30 pm. During inclement weather, the breaks will take place in our Dance Studio and Theater and include structured games and playtime.
Pick Up: 3:30 pm
At 3:30 pm, campers will return to the Theater space to wait for pick or to stay for aftercare. Pick-up will start at 3:30 pm. Parents will pick up their child from the Theater space and sign them out at the end of the day.
Aftercare 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Campers signed up for aftercare will spend time in our Theater space or Dance Studio, engaged in reading, drawing/coloring, structured games, and free play. You can sign up for aftercare on a weekly basis this year. After 5:45 pm, parents will be charged a fee of $50 for late pick-ups.
Friday Show Cases: 3:30 – 5:30 pm
On Friday afternoons, between 3:30 and 5:30 pm, campers will present their artworks and performances throughout the building. Parents are invited to attend and must pick up their children’s artwork at the end of each showcase.
